What can Adam's Handy Hands do?

Adam's Handy Hands started out just assembling flat packs. It was something I could do and I already had the necessary tools for the job.

There wasn't much of a need for that sort of work and it was becoming a bit repetitive, so I decided to expand and start doing more complex jobs. I started to do picture hanging, researching many of the types of hooks and anchors out there.

I broadened my skills and learnt to do plaster repairs, deck staining/oiling and replacing polycarbonate roofing. I wanted every day in my business to be different and have a bit of a challenge in the work I do.

Since starting my business I have assembled a lot of flat pack furniture, hung many paintings, TV's and mirrors, repaired and painted lots of plaster damages, replaced polycarbonate roofing, cleaned gutters and replaced a front loader washing machine seal and installed some window awnings.

I'm still learning every day and expanding my knowledge, taking the challenge to learn new skills and enjoy the different things I do in my business.

With my ever expanding knowledge and strive to keep on learning it is easier to ask me if I do the work, rather then asking what I can do. The list will be too long and I may miss something.

Diy fails

There are so many DIY repairs and jobs that can seem easy enough to do but take some skill and practice to perfect, and don't forget the price of the tools.

Some DIY jobs can be dangerous if the correct precautions are not taken and injury can follow. With the right tools, knowledge and safety precautions you can lessen the chance of any injuries.

Some of you may remember Home Improvements from the early 90's until 1999. You may remember Tim "The Toolman" Taylor (Played by Tim Allen) and the many times he failed at his DIY project. Learning from this it is best to leave the home improvements/repairs to the experts so you don't end up like Tim Taylor.

I have the tools, knowledge and experience to lessen the chance of any injuries happening and it saves you from any injuries. I have spent the money on the right tools for the job to make it easier for the job to be done perfectly.

Adam's Handy Hands turns ONE

Yesterday Sunday the 7^th of August is one year since I started my handyman business Adam’s Handy Hands and it has been improving in every way. I have gained some great clients and done some great work.

I decided to just assemble flat packs and I would hopefully have a successful business from that. I found out that there are a limited number of people needing their flat packs assembled.

I have since expanded what I can do and can now handle a variety of jobs, I can repair your plaster wall, hang pictures and mirrors on a variety of surfaces, repair hinges, install door locks and more. I will never stop learning, even on jobs I could do blindfolded.

I have purchased more tools to enhance my business and make the jobs easier for me and less of a struggle, purchased more materials to be ready for any job and have spares on hand if one fails.

I love getting my hands dirty repairing, assembling or drilling to get the job done and have always been about perfection in every aspect of what I do. If a job takes me 10minutes longer to do I don’t mind, but it has to be perfect and exactly how it should be.

It has been a great year for Adam’s Handy Hands, but there is still room to grow, expand and learn on how to best move my business forward.

Earning a living!!!

Since starting Adam's Handy Hands I have been thinking about where it is going to take me. Weather I keep working full time with handyman work on the side or start doing handyman work full time. Each time I get a few good jobs I see a few on posted on Airtasker that I quote on but the poster only wants what they posted the job for.

I quote a fair price to compete with others but the job poster want's what they posted the job for, which would be half what I would normally charge. I have to earn a living out of my work which I could do if people were paying a fair price for my work.

If your willing to pay a handyman or tradie $30 for a 2-2.5hr job then think about what you need to earn to live off. You are paid more then $15 an hour and able to survive, but have a think about the people you pay for work you need done.

I don't get my tools and materials for free so what make you think that it's alright to pay us tradies a low rate. We have a family to look after, tools to maintain, and materials to purchase along with money to pay rent and buy food.

If I could live in a house for free and not pay rent or was able to get tools for free then my prices would be cheaper, but I still need to live and maintain my tools.

Please have a think about what your paying your tradies and the time it might take them to complete the job.

A big month.

It has been a big month for Adam’s Handy Hands, I have done a variety of jobs and had my biggest month so far.

I have serviced bicycles, repaired a kitchen drawer, hung some picture rails, assembled some Ikea flat packs, mounted some Ikea shelves, dissembled a trampoline and repaired screws broken in a hinge.

With all this work coming in it has been very tiring and hard work, learning new things and working out how to repair things. I knew it was going to be tough to start my own company and tiring work to have a second job, but when I started Adam’s Handy Hands I had casual work and didn’t know if I would have work the next day.

I started Adam’s Handy Hands as something to keep me occupied and have some extra income, I never knew it would become such a great business and earn me what it has.

I have gained some great skills and learnt some new ways to complete jobs. I have expanded my skills and knowledge and had a great time doing it. It has been worthwhile me starting Adam’s Handy Hands as I have enjoyed my passion for repairs and working with my hands and tools.

Pricing and quotes!!

There are a lot of people hiring tradies to either quote a job or complete the job. It can be a hard time to choose the right tradie for your job, are they within your budget.

With my quotes I take into account my travel time, time to complete the job and any materials required. I also take into account that my tools won't last forever and they do wear out with each use, especially my drill bits and chisels. They may have insurance and other incidentals to pay for and a business to run.

If my price is higher then the next, it may be because I value my work and don't want to have to rush a job just to make it worth while to do. I like to know that when I'm assembling your flat pack, hanging your pictures or repairing your plaster, I don't have to rush the job, I can take the time to precisely complete your job and make sure that it is accurate.

If I have to lower my quote to much then it may not be worth while doing the job or I may have to rush the job to complete it and earn a reasonable amount. This may result in a non satisfactory job and you not being happy with the end result.

When you ask a tradie for a quote just think about what quality of work you want. Do you want someone to just come and complete the job as fast as possible, or someone that will complete the job precisely and carefully and may even do that little extra job that you need done.

I like what I do and value my work, I like to know that I can do the job precisely and not have to rush anything, I may even do that little extra for you and even complete that little extra job.

Next time you hire a tradie for a job just think about what they have to pay for, or even a family to support.

Moving house

Ever thought about moving house but your flat pack furniture that you have looks like it won't handle the rough treatment that the removalists will give it. Even if the removalists are careful with your furniture, the pieces that were assembled by you or someone else, have a tendency to bend and warp.

The safest and best way to transport that furniture is to disassemble your flat pack furniture and have the flat pieces reassembled. Your removalists can then easily transport your flat pieces of your furniture without the hassle of breaking your piece.

But then what about the nuts and bolts, won't they get lost in among your other items your are moving. If I disassemble your furniture I can hold onto your nuts and bolts making sure they don't get lost in the move.

I can also disassemble and reassemble your furniture without the need for instructions. I have the skill and knowledge of how the furniture assembles.

I have assembled many flat packs over the years and have the experience to disassemble and reassemble them as if they were straight out of the box.

Christmas break

With the successful start of Adam's Handy Hands I have been getting more and more work. I have been very busy the last few weeks and in need of some rest.

As Christmas gets closer I have been busy assembling many flat packs, and some early Christmas presents. It's been a hectic week servicing bicycles, installing new door handles and assembling many flat packs (including a trampoline).

I would also like to give a special mention to the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre, they have supported me by giving me lots of work getting their fleet of bicycles up and running for the kids to use. They have also agreed to further support me in the new year by seeing if any students want to learn about bicycle repairing. This will enhance my passion for bicycles and bicycle repairs and further help to grow Adam's Handy Hands.

Christmas Rush

With the lead up to Christmas, everyone wants their furniture and kids toys assembled before Christmas.

On Saturday the 19th I assembled a Vully2 with basketball ring, it was quite hot so decided to start early to beat the heat.

On Sunday the 20th I assemble many Ikea flat packs. I assembled two 3 seater couches, an eight seater dinning table and 8 chairs and a kids table with 2 chairs.

It was a very hot 40+ degree day making the assemble of the flat packs take longer then expected. I still took care and made sure everything was done perfectly.

With Christmas almost here I will be taking a break from the 23rd of December and will be back working from early January.

Ryobi 12v Drill

The mighty 12v Ryobi drill

A couple of years ago I received a Ryobi 12v drill as a present and was just going to be using this for drill only small holes and screw screws in.

I liked that it was a small compact drill in size and weight and included a quick charger. It is a great little drill that is handy for all those DIY jobs.

As I started doing more flat pack assemble I used this drill to drive the screws in making it alot easier on the hand and wrist. I then got some jobs requiring a drill to drill into timber and steel.

Instead of spending more money on another drill to do these jobs I decided to test the full capability of this drill. I had to drill through some solid timber to start with and then needed to drill through 5mm steel and then the timber.

With a good quality drill bit I gave the drill a go at drilling through the steel. It took some time to get started (like any normal drill would) but then kept powering on. I needed to drill a 9mm hole through this steel which the drill did with power and battery to spare.

Despite this drill being small and light, it has surprised me in how much power it has and what it can do.

 I would highly recommend this little drill to anyone wanting a drill to do everything, but not want the size and weight of anything larger.

Adam’s Handy Hands has been busy the last few days, assisting people move furniture around there homes, working out those pesky flat pack instructions and hanging those precious memories.
